I'm not condoning incest, but Papa John Phillips picked the wrong daughter to rape. I'm going to take some flack for that statement and it is important to point out again: I am not condoning incest, but wow - John Phillips really made the wrong choice in the 10-year consensual relationship with daughter MacKenzie - She is a dog! Bijou is certainly the 'hot' one in this family of hippies.
Perhaps MacKenzie had more in common with her dad: The incessant drug abuse, the hippie-dippie seventies and the angular nose, but I would hope that a guy of John Phillips open sexuality would have at very least noticed the bombshell that he bred in daughter number two! Further, Bijou has had similar relationship problems, problems that John exploited to get 'in' to his daughter MacKenzie...it would have been simple.
An original member of The Mama's and the Papa's, it is shocking the public outcry and news that this incestuous relationship has sparked. Was America asleep at the wheel? California Dreamin' describes the yearning for California and the obvious father-daughter sexuality which fame would make possible while Monday, Monday illustrates how anyone might feel waking up next to their own daughter on a Monday, naked...smoking a cigarette...mind afar reflecting on the hot, sexy weekend just spent while mom's on tour in Memphis. Who couldn't hear the incestuous undertones of My Girl and is it not obvious that Dedicated To The One I Love is a love letter written to young MacKenzie?
John would tell MacKenzie that there existed countries where open sexuality with one's daughter would be perfectly legal and accepted. He mentioned Fuji, which is confusing because there is no such country, but to rich hippies what difference does it make? He might as well have told young MacKenzie they could escape to Oz. He was clearly referencing this conversation in the dreamy Go Where You Wanna Go.
Still, I find it difficult to believe that John could not have honed a better game in luring his daughter Bijou into the sack. By simply crooning the words to Safe in my Garden young Bijou should have been nude and frolicking without the heroin injections required to meld a MecKenzie-like consensual relationship...he could have been improving his game! Couldn't he have coaxed Mama Cass away from his signature Papa John's Ham Sandwiches long enough to toss a three-way? That would have made Bijou comfortable, right?
America needs to go back to its roots and accept the Phillips family for what they are and accept how the family behaved. They are a talented dynasty. Others come to mind - the Jacksons. You don't see Valerie Bertinelli speaking of such taboo sexual encounters despite her being married to alcoholic guitar player Eddie Van Halen. Even Schneider, the plumber and registered sex offender living next door in One Day at a Time would be unable to touch the tantric sensuality that the Phillips family enjoyed. The American people need to be more understanding of celebrity life-styles. Am I wrong to speculate?
